We Need To Talk About Period Poverty
A widespread issue affecting thousands of women everyday
When discussing feminism, one of the most frequent arguments I hear from men is that we don’t need it anymore. Not in the Western world countries, at least.
That couldn’t be more wrong.
Sure, we got our right to vote, own property, and get an education or a career.
But equality doesn’t stop there.
We managed to fix some of the most evident and unfair symptoms of the patriarchal regime, but not all of them.
One of the issues that still affect thousands and thousands of young girls and women worldwide is period poverty. And we need to have an honest conversation about that.
What is period poverty?
In a nutshell, ‘Period poverty’ refers to having a lack of access to sanitary products mostly due to financial constraints. It also encompasses not having access to products managing menstrual pain and cramps, which can be debilitating in some circumstances.
Period poverty exists everywhere in the world, including developed countries.
