Women used to pick a partner based on the fact whether he was able to provide for them and a potential family, and not whether he was nice, well-manered or emotionally mature. So yes, in a way that's reducing men to what they bring to the table in terms of financial and social security. But this made sense, since women weren't allowed to work, have a bank account or own property.

Even though this situation is changed now, I feel like this behaviour is still somewhat present. But it is definitely fading away, at least among Millenials and Gen Z'ers.
